Old Fashioned

Invented at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, KY, either by or in honor of Col. James E. Pepper, a proprietor of a celebrated whiskey of the period. The oldest printed record of the Old Fashioned is in "Modern American Drinks" (1895) by George J. Kappeler.

2 oz bourbon
2 dashes Peychaud's bitters
1 splash of simple syrup
1 maraschino cherry
1 orange slice

Combine simple syrup, bitters, cherry and orange in an old-fashioned glass. Buddle into a paste using a muddler or the back end of a spoon. Pour in bourbon, fill with ice cubes, and stir.
